Parents Christian and Lorie Mount did not know Reagan was born with a hole in her heart. At her one-year checkup Dr. Bruce Davison of Columbus Pediatrics diagnosed a heart murmur, and immediately referred her to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Ind. It was confirmed Reagan had an atrial septal defect, a congenital heart defect requiring close monitoring.
At age 3, Riley Hospital Drs. Eric Ebenroth and Mark Hoyer concluded Reagan’s heart was starting to enlarge making surgery necessary. According to Lorie, open-heart surgery was avoided thanks to state-of-the-art technologies and techniques at Riley Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, making the procedure minimally invasive.
As the surgery approached, the cardiologist told Reagan’s parents he would offer them three months so Reagan could participate in a summer activity before the surgery.
“We asked her if she wanted to play soccer or t-ball and she said, ‘I want to do gymnastics.’ She was only 3, but we signed her up for an eight week tumbling class and she loved it,” says Lorie.
After the surgery and as soon as the doctor said it was okay to return to normal activities, she went back to the gym and has been there since. Today, Reagan is healthy and active with a bright future, and visits Riley Hospital once annually for checkups.
